The Rivalry
A poem by Eric Andersen

WARNING: THIS POEM IS ABOUT A VIDEO GAME. AS MANY OF YOU HAVE NOT PLAYED THE RECENT SONIC THE HEDGEHOG GAMES, I WILL LIST THE CHARACTERS AND OTHER THINGS YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND IN THIS POEM.

Characters:

•Sonic the Hedgehog: The main character of the game, he is a blue hedgehog that runs at supersonic speed to thwart his rival, Dr. Eggman Robotnik. He has saved the world many times, with the help of Tails (his fox-boy friend), and thwarted Eggman’s plans countless times.
•Miles Tails Prower: Also known as Tails, he is a fox boy that has devoted himself to following and helping Sonic. He is a genius with machines, making several robots on his own, and uses these machines to thwart Dr. Eggman’s plans. He is also the owner of a chaos emerald (there are seven in total), which is a powerful jewel needed for Dr. Eggman’s scheme to work. In this poem, Eggman has taken Tails’ chaos emerald, and is planning to use it to take over the world. Eggman has also recently escaped from Tails’ machine (he was recently beaten in a robot duel) to his airship, where he now is trying to evade Sonic and Tails.
•Dr. Eggman Robotnik: An evil scientist, his goal is to take over the world, and begin what he calls, “The Eggman Empire.” He is also a genius with machines, and has built a fleet of gigantic airships to destroy anything that gets in his way. However, Sonic keeps destroying them with his speed and power. In the poem, he has stolen the Chaos Emerald from Tails, and is heading to his destination, The Eclipse Cannon, which is a futuristic weapon able to destroy an entire planet. However, this weapon requires the seven Chaos Emeralds to work, which is why Eggman needs the emerald (he already has the other six.)

A blue blur rushes past,
Running faster than a bullet train, he
Jumps onto the wall of my flying fortress, and
Runs straight up the metal wall onto the deck.
He leaps off onto my robot and with heroic intentions,
Attacks the leg of my machine.
Like a raging storm,
He flips into the air and rushes toward his target,
Leaving a spherical imprint in the solid steel.
I know he will eventually destroy my creation,
But victory is still mine,
As I have obtained the fox boy’s powerful jewel.
My superior intellect instantly shows me my options,
I choose to press the big red button,
That will blow my airborne home out of existence,
Hoping to drag my lifelong enemy down too,
Finally I pull a lever to escape in my supersonic aircraft.
But to my eternal dismay a robotic flying machine appears under the flagship.
The blue blur jumps onto his friend’s vehicle.
Knowing the same thought has surfaced inside their minds,
I attempt to increase my velocity,
The allies mimic my decision.
My eyes glimpse his laser weapon shooting at my hand.
Cursing in disgust,
The realization finally hits me,
The fox boy will do anything,
To avenge my misdeed.
He is a worthy opponent,
Having won against me in a battle of metal creations.
His determination to prove himself,
Has so far overcome my attempts at making my dream a reality.
Suddenly a laser round impacts my palm,
Pain resonates through my entire being.
When the moment of hurt evaporates,
The realization hits me like a sledgehammer:
In my moment of agony,
The emerald was pulled from my grasp,
Falling to Earth,
Like a yellow meteor.
The plane flies up,
Straightens out.
The blue hedgehog holds his hand out,
And catches the falling yellow jewel.
The allies happily throw their hands up in the air,
And hurl a gloating remark in my direction.
Like a spoken javelin,
The jeer sticks to me,
Making my blood boil with anger.
Triumphantly the plane speeds off,
Vanishing from sight.
I was so close to achieving my destiny,
Now I feel like it will never come true.
