He had disappeared

Left no trace

Just gone

But it was easier

In a way

Because she never really

Knew him.

Just words on a page

That she knew she

Trusted.

That kind of

Bastard trust

That you put in

The little things

A cellular alert

A short buzz of longing

Then nothing

But

Silence.

The Disappeared One

She called him

Almost fondly

He’d disappeared

And along with him

Her inspiration

A sort of melodramatic

Tension that he broke

Replaced

Reformed

Resealed.

Because he had faith

In her

In her

Words

Never lied about how

Beautiful it was

And she

Perhaps naively

Believed.

But now he’s gone

And only occasionally does

She properly

Think of his poetry

Of the skill and

Finesse

Of the moments where she

Felt like

He understood everyone

And everything around him.

Like he understood her in

The deepest and most personal way

But at the same time

Understood her friend

Her mother

Her father

The local paper vendor.

His words were

Like an all-encompassing

Warmth

A light for everyone

To share.

Perhaps the Disappeared One

Understood

The world surrounding him

But

Perhaps the Disappeared One

Couldn’t

Understand

Himself.
