I've been in this cage far too long,
continually singing my sweet little tune,
bringing joy and pride into your lives.

Now I look to the sky,
seeing a vast new world,
just waiting for me to make it mine.

You see the longing in my eyes,
and know it's time to set me free,
but you take me away from the window.

My feathers loose all their luster,
my song falters and almost stops,
yet your selfish desire keeps me here.

Let me go if you love me,
my eyes constantly implore of you.
You avoid my gaze and continue on.

With every passing day,
I pray for a way to escape,
but I find none.

I fall into silence,
no longer eating or drinking,
just sitting with my eyes closed.

Slowly I allow myself to fade.
If I am not allowed to really live,
then why must I survive?

Death's hand grasps me at sunrise,
pulling me out of the cage,
then letting me go.

I fly towards the sun,
singing more beautifully than I ever have,
because I'm finally free.
