‘Stan’

The small metal clock on my mahogany table drones on and on, the monotone ticking constant as if following the beat of the storm outside. The rain patters all around the apartment complex that I call home, tapping at the windows like an unwanted visitor.

I have been sitting at my desk for hours now with an unfinished jigsaw and a cup of stale tea perched in front of my hands, causing me to wonder why I got out of bed at all. It's 11 in the afternoon and it's August, but there are flashes of lightning outside and a deep rumble every few minutes. The air is brisk, the sky a gloomy grey. The morning rain clouds up my window.

I stare emptily at the broken jigsaw pieces; a scattered picture of snowy mountain tops and clear blue sky. I'm not sure what possessed me to dig this out of the closet at 6 in the morning. I guess you could suppose that my subconscious thought that, if I could piece this puzzle together again, then I could do the same with my life. But, apparently, I can't even put together a stupid jigsaw puzzle, something a seven year old could complete.

I put my head in my hands, frustrated.

I should not have bothered. I am vacant and lifeless, not like I used to be. I used to be bright and beautiful. I was a forest, full of never-ending wonder and adventure. I was the chirping birds, free to fly wherever. I was the dainty flowers, always growing and blossoming magnificently.

Now I am a dusty volcano, dormant and boring but still waiting to explode with fiery destruction.
