Katie's mother had never had much luck with men. They never seemed to last long and Katie's mother always seemed to have a broken heart. One day she met a man and fell in love and finally she was happy. The relationship blossomed and he moved in.
But after a while he began to creep into Katie's room at night time when her mother was asleep and do bad things to Katie. Very bad things. Then when he left the room he would threaten that if she told anyone, even her mother, he would kill them both. Katie would cry herself to sleep, feeling violated and alone.
This continued on for months. Then one night above the groaning noises he was making Katie thought she heard a door slam in another room but she was not sure. He had his hand over her mouth so she could not make a noise and her breathing was harsh so she could not hear well. She hoped it was her mother, finally seeing what was going on. She prayed it was.
The next morning though her mother did not even look at her. She began to tell Katie off for the slightest things and made her do more errands and more housework. She was being short tempered and got angry with her all the time. Katie had no idea what was going on. Her mother and she had always been close. Now she felt so distant from her.
Katie's mother’s boyfriend still came to do his nightly visits. Nothing had changed there. Katie didn't know how long she could take it for. The bags under her eyes were obvious and the weight was falling off her already slim body. She felt sick but her mother refused to take her to the doctor. Her mother did not care anymore.
One night Katie was alone with her mother. The boyfriend had gone for a drink with a friend of his. Katie watched her mother in the kitchen preparing dinner. She so wanted to go and hug her. More than anything. So she got up and went to her mother, putting her arms around her waist. Violently her mother pushed her away, anger and hatred on her face. She grabbed the knife sitting on the bread board next to her and held it to her daughters’ chest. Katie cried out in fear and surprise.
"You!" her mother screamed. "You took him away from me."
"Wh- what do you mean mummy?" Katie sobbed.
"He wants you! He doesn't want me. How could you take him away from me you whore?"

Katie jumped in shock and confusion. What was she talking about? As the knife plunged into Katie's heart and she sank to the ground she knew. Her mother had known about what her boyfriend had done to Katie. But she was so heartbroken she could not see the truth. All she saw was that he had liked Katie better and that she was going to lose another man she had loved. She had gone insane.
"I hate you!" she screamed as she pulled the knife out and plunged it deep again. As the blackness surrounded Katie she sighed. At least now she would not have to be touched by that animal again. That was one good thing. The child developing in her died too and it wasn't until her mother had calmed down and saw what she had done that she turned the knife on herself, sobbing at her selfishness and stupidity. The police arrived many hours later to find a dead mother cradling her dead daughter, both soaked in blood.
