The End of Time

The end of time…

People use the phrase all the time. Some people use it and think that it is an imminent probability - that God will strike down with his judgment with no remorse. Others think of it only in passing. They believe it’s not something that will happen in their lifetime.

As I look down at the man lying in my arms and cradle him closer, two things occur to me. I know that the end isn’t just near…it’s here. It’s happening right at this very moment, and there isn’t a thing I can do to stop it. The other thing is that the death of this man in my embrace won’t just change my life forever, it’ll change the entire world.

“Nothing…you can do,” he croaks out as a single drop of blood drips down from the side of his mouth and off of his chin.

My brows furrow in anger and frustration. I refused to believe what he was saying.

“No,” I practically yelled as I shook my head and gripped the shirt on his chest. “There has to be something…”

He weakly reached out and touched my cheek with the tips of his fingers. His eyes locked onto mine and I could see his determination in his eyes. It made me feel sick.

“I spent as much time with you as I was allowed… Fate tempted me with you and I was too weak. I was selfish and took you for myself. Now they are punishing me. But…Lauren, every single second of my end and the hours after will be worth the short time I have spent with you.”

More blood seeped from his mouth and now from his nostrils. Fate was killing him from the inside out, and I was helpless to stop it.

“Please,” I cried and pushed against his chest. “Don’t leave me…”

“I love you…”

You read all these stories nowadays about women falling in love with supernatural creatures – how even though they have no preparation for such a life change, they are able to slip into their mates’ worlds without hesitation.

It hasn’t exactly been like that for me.

I have been chased my entire life. For some reason, there was this cult-like group that has been after me ever since I can remember. Even before I came into the world, they were after my parents. They want one thing…me, dead.

Why do they want that, you ask?

If only I knew the answer that that…

Other than a massive, powerful group of people that want me dead, my life was pretty normal. For safety reasons, I was homeschooled. My father insisted on me taking self-defense classes. When I turned twenty-one, I was more than capable of taking care of myself and my parents felt that it was safe enough for me to go out and try this thing called life on my own.

As for the things you read about women meeting these supernatural creatures, I didn’t exactly have that kind of meeting with my supernatural… We didn’t just run into each other at some random establishment, a coffee shop or something…

The day we met had been a gloomy one. In fact, it was kind of the perfect setting. I had gone shopping to stock up my fridge that had been emptied over the past week. The rain was pouring and I was struggling to keep myself and my groceries dried as I carried them to my third floor apartment.

I should have known the group had been watching me that day. Things had been too quiet recently. There were four of them, and they seemed to have come out of nowhere. One of them grabbed me from behind and my first instinct was to throw my head back.

The man cried out in pain and he dropped his arms as I dropped my bag of groceries. Surprisingly, the only thought in my mind at the moment was ‘Crap, my eggs…’

The man I had hit was cradling his face in his hand, most likely dealing with a broken and bloody nose. That gave me time to deal with the other three. I was grabbed from behind again and as one of them came at me from the front, I lifted my legs and kicked as hard as I could, knocking him backwards.

I was able to look over at the fourth man, and I had this odd feeling that he was just going to stand there. He kept staring at me and didn’t even move from his spot. Not that I cared… It was one less guy to deal with.

Whirling around as fast as I could, I balled my hand into a fist and threw it forward until it came into contact with the jaw of the guy in front of me. I heard a loud ‘pop’ and I have to admit, a grin of satisfaction formed on my face.

The sound of a pocket knife being opened had me spinning around once more. But I didn’t even get the chance to deal with the asshole who thought it would be okay to pull a knife on me.

A fifth man had shown up, but he wasn’t aiming to attack me. He was dealing with the man that had pulled the switchblade. He moved with inhuman speed and before I knew it, three of the four men were on the ground with pools of blood mixing with the rain puddles. The fourth man had run away…

“What the hell? I had it under control!” I was pissed. I was perfectly capable of taking care of myself…

"Is that the thank you I get for helping?” The man’s voice was deep and rich. The one word that came to mind when I thought of his voice was…chocolate.

I couldn’t deny the effect his voice alone had on me, but I wasn’t about to bring it to light and let him know.

“I didn’t need help,” I muttered and moved to pick up my bag of groceries.

He got there before me. “Here, let me…”

I narrowed my eyes. “Who are you and what the hell do you want?”

He stopped and turned to look at me over his shoulder. “I am Azathoth…and I just want to help you take your groceries into your apartment. That is all.”

“Zath?” My breath was shaky as my hands tightened on my male’s shirt. I dropped one down and ran my fingers through blood-soaked hair. “Stay with me…come on!”

His breathing had slowed. I couldn’t even see his chest lifting.

“The demon of time and space? You’re fucking kidding me…”

Zath shook his head with a visible smirk on his face. “No, I’m not.” He placed his glass of wine down and moved to sit closer to me on the couch. “I know this is quite a bit to take in-…”

“It’s a shit-ton of stuff to take in,” I interrupted.

His face twisted and he reached out to gently touch my hand. “I understand.”

“Okay, go through it again; maybe I can get it this time around.”

“Alright,” he chuckled once. “I am the demon of time and space. I have seen all outcomes of the future, but the thing is that I have no control over what happens. I just know what could be, depending on people’s decisions…”

“A demon,” I muttered again. “So…do you know Lucifer?”

Zath’s eyes immediately grew darker and he lowered his head. “I do. He…tries to take advantage of my powers.”

The idea of this man being used for evil made my stomach turn for some reason.

“That’s the reason I came to find you.”

“Find me?”

“I told you – I know all outcomes of the future. I knew about you…and me from the very beginning. I knew that if I didn’t come find you, Lucifer would control me for the rest of existence. And if I did, then…”

“Then what?”

“Then we’d be together,” he swallowed hard in obvious nervousness.

My heart jumped in my chest. Being with this male seemed more and more of my future with every moment spent with him…

“Leave the demon, Lauren, and we shall let you live.”

In the time spent with Zath, I had forgotten about the group that had wanted me dead. But they hadn’t forgotten about me.

It all made sense now… Somehow, they knew the two of us would find each other, and they were fighting against a demon being with a human…or something, I never really understood their reasoning, and I didn’t really care.

With time, all I wanted was to be with Time.

I looked at the leader of the cult and spit out, “Never.”

“Very well…”

I had always thought the cult would come after me, that they would take my life. I never once thought that they would try to take Zath’s…

The end of time…

The demon of time and space, my demon, my male was dying in my arms. The world as we know it was coming to its demise right in my very arms and there wasn’t a thing I could do.

I remained helpless.

All of my years of learning how to defend myself and protect those I love were for naught. I leaned down and brushed my lips across Zath’s forehead. He was my one reason for existing. As I finished our last kiss, he exhaled his final breath and the world around us started crashing down.
