Dare You

Do you remember being content before me?  A period of peaceful happiness.  Satisfaction.

Do you remember the first time I said, “I love you”? How I flew through the trees and dared you to chase me.  Dared you to love me too.

Do you remember telling me about forever?  That there are some promises too big to keep.  Too big to make.

Do you remember not wanting me to leave?  How empty it was without me there.  Without you here.

Do you remember how I was there for you?  When your grief was so great you ceased to function.  Ceased to exist.

Do you remember how I never left your side?  Even when you treated me like dirt.  When neither of us deserved it.

Do you remember feeling safe in my arms?  How you fell asleep in my car going 75mph.  At one in the morning.

Do you remember my times of need?  How you gradually slipped through my fingers.  Until we got here.

Do you remember my face on that day?  How I fought back the tears.  My heart breaking in front of you.

Do you remember what it was like?  Being loved unconditionally and whole heartedly.  Even when you couldn’t reciprocate.
