A fun write, in response to a question I found on Yahoo! Answers:

"If I was a poet and didn't know it, would I still be a poet?
I mean, wouldn't I have to know it if I were a poet. Or would another poet know it? Or would no one know it, if I were a poet? Please answer only if you know it. Because if you don't know it you won't get any stars."

You certainly could be a poet if you didn't know it.
Just because you didn't know it doesn't mean you're not a poet.
All it takes to be a poet
(Didn't you know it?)
Is the thoughts and emotions you need to express.

Of course you might not have done this, seeing as you didn't know it;
That you were, of course, a poet.
It takes, as I said (you know it!)
Only the thoughts to be a poet-
The need to express the emotion, but no need for rhyme.

Does that answer your question about being a poet?
Now you know that to be one you don't need to know it.
You simply need to be at heart a poet.
Though if you DO know it-
Use it well, and with a poem change the world
