The death of the roommate is not actually suicide.

The Roommate’s Death

-By Srinath Srinivasan

It was a nice sunny day and two roommates Nikhil and Vincent had just woken up. Nikhil was getting ready as he was late for office whereas Vincent was on leave. They had their breakfast and Nikhil left for his office. He reached his office and at about 11 Nikhil got a call from the police it came to him as a bitter shock as they said that something had gone wrong and that he had to come home immediately. Nikhil insisted on knowing what had happened exactly and that’s when they said that there had been a suicide and that his roommate was dead.

Nikhil rushed to his room to find that the police had broken the door and Vincent’s body was on the floor they said he hung himself to the ceiling fan. Speechless as he was Nikhil somehow gather the courage to get words out of his mouth and went on by asking what and how this happened, the police had no idea about it they were around the area when they saw a person knock the door repeatedly so they wondered what was going on and upon enquiring they found that Vincent had borrowed some money from a money lender and he did not pay him back for about three months. On repeated knocking when there was no response the police had forced their way into the room to find him hanging to the fan, judging by the situation they guessed that Vincent unable to pay his debt hanged himself to death. Nikhil knew about the debt but he had never expected that Vincent would do this, \"he could have waited if only he needed the money that bad I would have got it from someplace\" said Nikhil in grief. \"I would have waited a little longer if he had asked me to didn't I wait patiently for 5months\" said Surya and offered his condolences before leaving.

The body was sent to burial ground where he was to be buried and after the event had concluded as sad as he was Nikhil returned to his room and looked around still missing his friend. After sometime he had his dinner and went about to put away the plate in the sink, he reached the sink where there should have been two plates only one was available. Who would take a stupid plate and even if he did what use would that be to him thinking this to himself he went ahead to wash the plate when he found a blood stained broken piece of the plate. It was strange he didn't understand why there had been blood on it, suspecting something fishy about it he got a hunch that maybe it had something to do with Vincent’s death so he went to the burial ground as it was late so no one was around so he dug out the grave with a friend he had called along. \"What are we doing here in the graveyard at this time? \" asked Sachin \"we need to dig out Vincent’s body trust me he is not the kind to commit suicide and there is something fishy going on, Surya seemed to be really kind saying he would have waited for a little while longer when he recently threatened to do something really bad if he didn’t get his money back\" saying this Nikhil handed out a spade and started to dig, Sachin joined him unsure about whether it was the right thing to do but he trusted Nikhil so continued digging eventually they unearthed the coffin and opened it. Immediately Nikhil reached for Vincent's hands then to his head, upon closer look he found a head injury which was covered by something which looked like some paste of some sort meaning something did happen it was not a suicide

\"This is a murder see there is a head injury Surya must have stopped the bleeding and then glued the open wound and hanged him to make this look like a suicide and as there was no reason to suspect a murder we didn't go for any police enquiry but I guess we have to now\" said Nikhil. They quickly sorted the help of the police, had the body sent for post mortem in which it revealed that the head injury had occurred before hanging, the only question running in their mind was if Surya is the culprit how did he manage to lock the door and stay out when Vincent was hung inside, there was no way to escape from the window or any other source so they rushed back to the room to inspect the door which was locked and the death had occurred on the other side. They searched for any clues as they started the police detective noticed that the door’s bolt had been replaced \"that’s because the older one was broken due to the forced entry the police had to make\" said Nikhil \"There you have it I have to see the old bolt as I think that holds the key to this mystery where is it?\" asked the detective. On searching in the garbage they found the broken bolt and the screws they were different upon closer inspection they found that something was unusual about it. The screw was a little sticky with a screw driver the inspector opened the bolt which was newly fixed to the door to see if the same sticky substance was present in the holes where the old screw was fixed, they couldn't find anything sticky or any other aspect. But there it was the door was definitely tampered with as it showed something was scraped out of it.

They immediately called in the forensic team and examined the screw and the hole, there was some sort of strong holding adhesive placed on the screw as well as the hole but most of it was scraped out. “Surya must have hit the plate on him in a heated argument then seeing the blood stopped the bleeding using a gum of some sort then hung him removed the screws from the bolt dipped it in the gum filled the holes too then stepped out to let the gum hold it firmly seeing the police he started his act of trying to knock the door to call him out seeing that there was no response the police barged in and broke the bolt, the gum must have offered some resistance making it look like the door was bolted from inside. When the funeral had begun everyone would have been in the burial ground that’s when he came back to remove the gum to clear any clues left behind it’s the way it must have gone down but there is no way to prove this it’s all just a theory which may or may not be true but still I would interrogate him” said the detective and left.

The next day the interrogation began and the detective could not find anything on Surya no one had seen him come inside which made it impossible to pin Surya to this murder. As no proof was available they decided that the only way to prove it all would be to make Surya admit it on his own. They started to work on a plan, floating ideas but all in vain so they sought the help of Sachin who was a lawyer by profession. Surya was once again brought in for an interrogation but this time not by the police but Sachin. “ So Surya you do realise that the body of Vincent was sent in for medical inspection and it revealed that there was an injury which was covered up and then he was hung making it a murder?” asked Sachin “ But what does that have got to do with me? Why the hell are you asking me all of this?” “You will know soon, now tell me when did you reach Vincent’s room?” asked Sachin “I reached around 10” replied Surya. “The medical team says that the death took place around 10 which makes you the culprit” said Sachin “Sure but I was outside the door remember check you facts before accusing me Sachin” replied Surya, “Yes you were but doesn’t that say that the killer was inside when you arrived so you should have heard something did you hear anything?” asked Sachin to which Surya denied of hearing any noise no matter what questions Sachin asked Surya had given confident answers making it impossible to pin the murder on him but still Sachin went on.” The blood was cleaned and stopped using a strong adhesive that you use and it was the same thing that was used to glue the screws to the bolt do you know anything about that” asked Sachin “It’s a popular adhesive everyone uses that so it doesn’t prove anything now does it?” asked Surya “yes but it also means that you did it so I think that it was you who cleaned up the wound then stopped the bleeding used the adhesive you had with you in the car and you did all of this carefully enough that no one noticed you” said Sachin strongly to which Surya replied “Why only me anyone could have done all of that cleaned up the head wound and glued it so even now it doesn’t make me the culprit”. ”Yes it does you know why because all the while we mentioned it to be an injury but we never told you it was a head injury, making you the culprit”.

The End
