In response to Hiralarious' challenge. Thanks for such an awesome line!! I was able to take it and run, and it helped get the creative juices flowing in my mind.

If you really want to know what this poem is about just ask and I'll explain it.

You were supposed to be different,
My dark-haired obsession.

You promised to hold me close and protect me from
The unknown forces that attempt to claim me,
That creep from the bottomless dark pool of
My fear and self-doubt.

For a while I floated in the blue-green
Glory of your beautiful eyes.
But I found all too soon that you were
Just like the others.

You left me to drown and laughed from the shore,
Mocking my pitiful struggles.
You tossed my life preserver to that vapid little doll
And now she wears it on her finger.

But despite your weight pulling me under,
I resurfaced and choked up the water.
Right onto your precious memory.

For a long time I walked,
Grief and my sodden wings keeping me heavy,
But it’s all okay now.

I may not be able to swim in your depths,
But I can soar on his ice.
