It was a cloudy, gloomy day outside. Mary woke up, feeling a shiver run down her back. It was colder then usual in her room. She knew why, her mother was in there, Helen. *What is this?* her mother shouted, holding up her old wedding dress ripped to shreds. Mary mouth laid open, in shock. Did her mother really think she did that? *It  might have been a raccoon...* Mary responded. There was a long pause in the room, what almost seemed like an eternity. Finally, her mother, once again, broke the silence. *You are grounded! I expect you stay in this room until you tell me the truth, young lady!* Helen stormed off, slamming the door behind her. Mary put her head into her pillow, letting out a huge sigh. She was planning an escape, she will not stand for that! She should not be treated like that.

It was ten at night, when her mother sent her out to go to the store across town. She could not disagree, this could be her escape. Mary agreed, and she ran out of the house. Mary knew where the store was, on almost the other side of town. She could be back by midnight, but will she be? No! She started walking, and it was awfully dark. Only the light from the street lights shined above. Stars were out, glistening in the sky. *This is beautiful...* Mary said, with a tone of fear in her voice. She went around to an alley, to take a rest. Mary had rest her shoulder on a garbage can, when she heard something. Growling? No, it could not be! But it was! A large figure popped out behind the garbage can, with red bright eyes. The eyes seemed to stare into her soul. She paniced, already! The creature snarled, looking as if it was almost laughing. Before Mary took any action, the creature leaped on to her, it was a vicious dog! She grabbed the dog, trying to kick it off her. It was no use! She took the lid of the garbage can, and hit it on the head of the dog. The dog was distracted, and Mary ran as fast as a lightning bolt. Faster and faster, until she got home. Mary burst through the door, sobbing. Her mother, Helen, took one quick look at her and ran towards her. *My Dear! What happened?* Mary could not get the words out, until finally she said, *D-d-DOG!* She cried on her moms shoulder, and eventually they made up.

Mary had learned never to escape, not even like that! She should go with an adult, as she was so young, not old enough and just not read. This experience had scarred her for life, and so did the dog. The dog was found and put down, as it was a vicious dog with rabies. Luckily, Mary was not bitten, but still was scratched horribly.
