Kelli and Joey

I met Kelli when I was 6 months old and she was 13. She gathered me in her arms and looked into my eyes with such love and joy. She proclaimed right then and there “Joey, we’re going to be best friends forever!”

After that day we were inseparable. We went anywhere and everywhere together. We went to the park, on vacations, and she even took me to a few amusement parks and fairs. She took care of me and loved me with all her heart. I loved Kelli just as much, and I could never imagine my life without her. We grew up and became each other’s confidants. She would tell me about all her boyfriends, or how her day had been. I would tell her about my day and the adventures I had with my friends, Squeakers and Tuggies. Needless to say, we were a match made in heaven.

After Kelli graduated from high school she got accepted to the University of Southern California. She was ecstatic and couldn’t wait to tell me about it once she got home. She boasted about how nice the weather was down there compared to Utah, and how we were going to have so much more to do. She told me about all the parks, and shops, and she was excited to take me to the beach for the first time. So we set to work packing our stuff over next two and a half weeks.

My birthday was the day before we were supposed to move, I was turning six that year. I was afraid that Kelli would forget with all the excitement and commotion that had been going on with the move. But she didn’t. As soon as we woke up, Kelli wrapped me in her arms and kissed my head “Happy Birthday Joey! I love you so much,” she said and kissed the top of my head again.

She had my whole day planned out; first it was a trip to the spa where they pampered me with a manicure and pedicure. Then we went to the park for a picnic. We played Frisbee and catch, and I even got my own steak sandwich. It was one of the best birthdays ever. The next day was moving day; we loaded up her Honda civic with all of her suitcases and my bag. We said good bye to her mom and dad, giving lots of hugs and kisses. Her mom gave her a care package for the trip with lots of Kelli’s favorite goodies, and even some beef jerky for me. I remember her dads words very clearly as he leaned in the passenger window. He took me by the face and looked me square in the eyes and said “Joey, I need you to take care of my baby girl, ok…” I smiled up at him and gave him a big kiss. He patted my head and wished both of us a safe trip, as mom hollered from behind him for us to call her once we got there. The trip was amazing; there were many new sights and smells I had never experienced. When we made pit stops she would let me out to run around and stretch my legs.

Finally, after six and a half hours, we arrived at our new home. “Look at it Joey, this is where we start our new adventure,” I remember her saying with the biggest smile I had ever seen on her face. I couldn’t help but smile back and wiggle with anticipation. We unloaded the Civic and explored all the new rooms in the little apartment. In no time everything was in its rightful place and Kelli and I snuggled down on the couch to watch a movie. Kelli started her classes that next Monday and I found myself missing our old home. I would wander around aimlessly staring out the window, waiting for Kelli to return. I’d lounge on the couch for a while, then wander to the bedroom and lounge on the bed, and then wander back to the couch. I did this every day for a couple weeks. Then one day Kelli came home but she wasn’t alone, she had brought a tall man with jet black hair and bright blue eyes with her. She introduced me to him. “Joey this is Eric, he’s a friend I made at school,” she said, patting me on the head. Eric hardly even gave me a second glance. I was small for my age and lots of people over looked me. I didn’t like him much; I could just feel something that made me wary of him.

Kelli took Eric on a tour of the apartment, and he talked to her like the guys in the cheesy romance movies that we watched sometimes. This made me even more uneasy. They sat on the couch and talked for hours about school, movies that had just come out, and how hard it was to afford college. Four hours later Eric left, but not before he told Kelli that he’d have to come back and see her again. Kelli smiled and told him that sounded great. I didn’t think it sounded great at all. In fact I didn’t want Eric to come anywhere near Kelli or the apartment again.

That night, as Kelli locked up for bedtime, I followed her around wishing I could just tell her how I felt about Eric. After turning off all the lights we climbed into bed and Kelli kissed my head good night. “Nighty night big man,” she said, and rolled over. It was around 3 am when I woke up to the sound of the front door opening. I immediately perked up on the bed, listening intently to make sure I wasn’t hearing things. I mumbled to myself and got off the bed and got closer to the door, feeling unease as I listened. I heard footsteps wandering around. I started mumbling louder and Kelli woke groggily and looked over at me by the door. “What’s wrong Joey?” she asked, getting up and walking over to me. She knelt down beside me and rubbed my shoulders. “Come on let’s get back to bed buddy,” she said, standing up and trying to guide me back to the bed. I wouldn’t budge, something was going on behind that door, and I didn’t like the feeling that Kelli was in danger. When I didn’t budge and wouldn’t stop staring at the door Kelli decided to put my mind at ease. “Look Joey nothing is wrong. Come on, I’ll show you,” she said, and opened the bedroom door. That’s when a tall man with jet black hair and bright blue eyes lunged at Kelli, knocking her off balance and muffling her scream as they landed on the bed together. Kelli’s dad’s words echoed in my head as time moved in slow motion. “Joey, I need you to take care of my baby girl, ok…” These words repeated over and over inside my head as I watch Eric attack Kelli on the bed, and Kelli struggled to get him off her. I then found myself lunging at Eric’s legs screaming for him to leave Kelli alone, and to get out of our house. I bit down on his leg and sank my teeth into his calf. He hollered out in pain, reeling around and punched me in the top of my head.

Slightly stunned by the blow, my grip on his leg loosened and he turned around and kicked me square in the chest. Pain shot through my chest and I cried out as it knocked me back a foot or two. “Leave him alone, leave us alone!” Kelli pleaded as Eric turned back to her. I was mad now! I started screaming at Eric again, but this time I was letting him know that I was coming for him. I lunged onto the bed trying to place myself between him and Kelli. I bit down on the muscle between his neck and shoulder. I was rewarded with an agonizing scream. I then bit down on his cheek, and then on his shoulder. He jumped back off the bed and turned to run. I followed close on his heels, snapping at him and yelling. He turned the corner to run out the front door when I leaped and sank my teeth into a mouth full of butt. He screamed so loud and so high that I had to let him go because I started laughing so hard. He limped hastily out the door, holding his butt. I stood there breathing hard staring out the door as Kelli came around the corner. She dropped to her knees next to me and gathered me into her arms. “Oh Joey, you are my Hero! You are the best dog and best friend in the whole world,” she cried into my shoulder. I turned to face her, kissing her on the cheek and nuzzling her neck. I just sat there to comfort her as she cried. The next week Kelli’s parents came to visit after hearing about what happen. I sat proudly by Kelli’s side as she retold the story Kelli’s dad looked down at me with a smile and with such love in his eyes and said, “good boy!”
