As you walk towards me, on the street

I see your eyes turn away, focusing any where but my face

you are ready to pass me by, hastening your feet.

If by some chance, I happen to catch your gaze

I turn into a person, instead of an object

I'm brought into the light, out of the haze.

It makes it harder for me, to be dismissed

it makes you notice my features

it can cause you discomfort, or become slightly pissed.

I bring you closer to facing your fear

that you might be next, it could happen to you.

Instead of a stranger, I could be your peer.

So many of us, with nowhere to call home

year in and out, trying our best to survive

without hope of stopping, forced forever to roam.

The reasons we are here, are too many to list

bad choices, human frailties, loss of a job

not all due to alcohol, drugs or a fist.

That we exist at all, is a matter of shame

In rich countries, with high resources

a fact that dulls the shine, and tarnishes each name.
