Regardless of whatever else exists in the observable universe, through us this universe has created a recognition of itself from within itself.  It is by no means a full recognition or a complete understanding, but regardless of what we go on to learn and find out, we can say that at the very least this has occurred.  And regardless of whether this universe intended to do it or not, it has happened.

To some this might be a staggering thought; to others it is perhaps not so surprising.  If it is possible for one to reason it, then others most likely know this now and have thought it before.

What does this mean?  Well, it could mean that every person, animal and plant which has ever existed has contributed to this recognition.  That right now, all of us and everything on this planet has a crucial and ongoing role, even if we don’t see it or realise it ourselves.  It might mean that we have a responsibility we should consider and carry forward or maybe it is enough to simply pass on this knowledge to those who come after us.  Maybe some of this or maybe none of it: any which way, it doesn’t seem that it is for me to say.  Perhaps it is simply good enough to know that this universe from whatever distant beginning and through whatever expanse of time and through whatever twists and turns of complexity has right now, through our eyes and minds and examination and understanding, recognised its own existence.
