Once I buttered your bread

shared a chest for to lay your head

chased away spider and mouse

so this place could be your house.

Now I stand here dead

with a heart full of words left unsaid

and only spider and mouse

claim this place to be their house.

For I was a versatile man

living in this versatile land

where nothing is ever the same

no not even calling my name

For it wasn't meant to be

having you home here with me

just the spider and mouse

inside me in my own house

A spider that you dread

this mouse that chased you from our bed

the only slug and louse

in this place once then a house.

We were never to wed

not even a shotgun loaded with lead

blowing away spider and mouse

so this place could be our house.

Oh but I was a versatile man

living in this versatile land

where nothing is ever the same

no not even calling my name

Oh but it wasn't meant to be

having you home here with me

just the spider and mouse

inside me in my own house.
