My friends they told me

That I should get a life

And quit my writing

Cause it wouldn't get me by

When I'm old

When I'm old

I just may find myself

In an old rocking chair

Sitting by some window

With a nurse standing there

Trying to help

Trying to help

I left them behind

While I forged ahead

They're reading my books

While they're sitting in bed

All by themselves

All by themselves

I'll get me my pen

A pad of paper to write

My friends are old

It seems they have no life

Of their own

Of their own

I make a little money

From each book that I sell

While my friends are weeping

Cause I wrote them so well

I'm getting by

I'm getting by

I left them behind

While I forged ahead

They're reading my books

While they're sitting in bed

All by themselves

All by myself

All by themselves

All by myself
