Another poem stemming from another poetic status update. This is just a freeform, nothing huge. I'm in a deep poetic funk of late that I can't seem to dig myself out of, so I'm just trying to post what comes to mind in attempts to make progress. Pardon me if this attempt befouls your evening. ;)

I never knew who I was

Until I knew you.

I never knew that my eyes were blue

But burning red hellfire inside me

How could I have guessed that,

Although you said I was the best,

I'm the worst girl on this fair planet's face?

I can't understand why you would hold my hand

If my heart is such a disgrace

Who were you, then, to say you were my friend

And knew my line and lace?

I never knew who I was

Until I knew you.

I never knew that my soul sang songs to the sound of the radio

I had no clue that I had a poet heart or the deepest eyes in town

I didn't even think that I may be "the prettiest one you know"

That wasn't me, or that's what I was told...

You sought to change me; to metamorphose your butterfly

And you said all those pretty things

Tried to make my heart fly

It spread its wings and soared through the air

Spinning gold and sunshine on the wind of wondrous words

You lift me up so high

I can't even see the world.

I never knew who I was

Until I knew you.
