I watched the magpie for hours,

For so long that even the sun waved goodbye,

Sinking deep beyond the horizon,

Its rays glorifying the bird’s feathers,

Hundreds of shades of black.

More than once its handsome eye caught mine,

Acknowledging me, welcoming me,

To its world, for a moment.

As I watched the magpie I flew too,

Over and away from everything,

Weightless.

The magpie left.

I crashed back to Earth,

My heart shot with the bullet of its absence,

We both knew he had to leave.

I sat not on a branch, but a window ledge,

Covered not in feathers, but clothes,

My eyes not as handsome or dark as his.

We were not of the same world.

Oh how envy and loneliness set upon me,

Crying out for the magpie’s return,

He did not.

He didn’t understand my human pleas,

Nor did he envy me, as much as I did him.
Stuck in a human world.
