The Man in the White

By Rutvik Bapat

“Hallelujah” I whispered to myself ambling during my usual evening strolls. I was glad that I was finally acknowledged by a reputed college for my 4 year b tech program. I mulled over the obstacles I faced during my whole XII grade. The constant spats with my father due to my low grades and ergo being an inappropriate influence for my younger brother. I diverted my mind to the ambience around me. Everything seemed exuberant .Oldies chatting with their old buddies, children playing in the lawn area of the garden, couples taking strolls with locked hands and the usual public ambling on the sidewalks just like me. I checked the time on my cell phone. It was 8:35.  I realized that I was walking constantly for 35 minutes ergo I decided to look for a vacant bench to sit. Almost all the benches were acquired by couples sitting close to each other. I again turned back to see if I had missed any vacant bench. I realized that a man in a white shirt stood on the sidewalk some meters away facing me. I avoided him and started walking on my usual route when I noticed the same man walking just beside me. I changed my pace to lose him but he aped my pace with a fixed gaze on me. Ominous cerebrations like kidnapping, murders and thefts started circulating in my mind. I searched my mind to find ways to lose him but in vain. I found a vacant bench just ahead of me. I stopped abruptly and sat on the bench overjoyed that I had finally lost him. To my surprise the man went a few meters ahead and turned back and slowly entered the lawn area and sat on the other side of the bench. This was an unexpected consequence of my action and was a bit intimidating. I felt adrenaline inside my body which was something positive compared to the situation. I lifted my legs to stretch them in order to anticipate for any hostile actions of the man. I stood abruptly and moved towards the entrance of the garden. I turned back to see if the man was the still there but to my surprise he was gone. I again contemplated the area around the bench but could not find that man in the white shirt. I again used my ken around the vicinity to identify him from the crowd of the people in the lawn and the sidewalks but again in vain. I felt my heart beat gradually slowing down to normal thusly feeling normal again. I checked the time and it was 8:50. So to cover my 10 minutes I ambled around the lawn on the sidewalk one last time. This time the world seemed normal again. There were no abrupt movements around me and nor was anyone stalking me. “Halleluyah” I whispered again.
