Calm Serenity

The street light shined upon the tear driven road. It was a cold night that made the people outside shiver with fear and envy. They feared the darkness that only seemed real in dreams. But they envied the people inside, celebrating this night. We come across a woman slowly walking along the road, her heels making the puddles splash. She keeps her head up, looking at the clouds that had begun to rain again. She sighs because she wishes that she could be with her family, partying all night. She continues walking through the rain. Her thoughts clouded, misted by the nervousness that she feels.  A car passes her, sending a cool rush of wind her way. She stares at it, wondering if this was a good idea. Fear begins to work its way into her stressed mind. Her eyes dart to every dark corner between the suburban houses. Every shadow became a figure, and every noise became threatening. She stops, suddenly, the breath taken out of her. The house that is before her has two people in it, a man and a woman. The two people are visible from a window and they are cuddled on the couch. The woman outside looks in at them, shock piercing her calm serenity. 5…4…3…2…1.

“Happy New Years,” the woman inside says to the man. She kisses him passionately, and he kisses back. The woman outside isn’t subtle about how much betrayal she feels and makes her slow but steady walk back to her apartment. Every breath she takes seems to make a bigger hole in her heart where her knight in shining armor used to stay. Her chin is held high as her cheeks become wet. Whether because of tears or rain, it does not matter. Because, either way, someone is crying tonight.
