altBlack Beans

by Susan H Fouts

Black beans soaking in a pot

Learning to accept our lot

With food prices on the rise

Gas even higher to the skies.

*

Black beans simmering on the stove

With bay leaf and oregano

Intoxicating aroma reaches my nose

And slithers down to my toes.

*

A lovely dinner they will make

If my belly does not ache.

Rice will be a nice surprise

And appealing to my eyes.

*

They both together will complete

A tasty dinner we can eat.
