Check Out Isle

by Susan H Fouts

She worked the Walmart check out isle

and never once did crack a smile

Her gloominess was so so deep

No happiness to awaken her from sleep

Her customer paid with check and cash

So with no ID put back half the stash

Now it was my turn to face her gloom

I asked her if her day was going well

She said, "No" but thought, "Go to hell"

I asked if she had a chance to vote

She never smiled and told me, "No"

How sad to be in that state of gloom

A force so heavy, it fills the room.
