Word for My Daughter
by Susan H Fouts
With small children of your own
Waiting for them to be grown
Patience, dear, for days will come,
But for now let innocence
their foreheads kiss
When old as I, you'll look behind
to days of crayola drawings on the wall
And wonder where did time fly
And sigh for lack of words.
Never to retrieve those innocent years
Or behold young eyes with crying tears
Or the wonder of a precious look
Or expression on their faces
So now let patience have her work
Enjoy this time before it leaves
And autumn settles on the trees
Then winter's blast of cold will chill
to kill all memory.
Enjoy the spring with flower's bloom
Though hyperactivity fills the room
It will slow down as time goes by
Then will a tear be in your eye.
You'll long to see, but times gone by.
