“Ouch! There’s that pain again.” Throbbing from the front of my right leg, along my chest and down my left leg. I force myself to get up, and wander down the hallway. The sound of my paws tapping on the wooden floor were the only thing breaking the silence. My eyes are startled with the bright light of the sun shining through the kitchen window. I search around for my bowl. It’s sitting in its usual spot next to my Vivian. She looks down at me peacefully and says “Well look who finally decided to wake up! My sleepy head.” She sits down next to me on the floor and pats my soft toffee coloured fur. Her eyes look saddened today, but she smiles like she doesn’t want me to notice. I simply rest my head on her knee. That makes her smile. However also makes her look worse though.
“Argh! There’s that pain again” I let out an uncontrollable yelp. Viv looks worried and starts calling for her mum, Lilah. The pain is getting worse, my vision goes blurry, and my head feels faint. Everything goes black. I hear my body hit the floor.
Beep. Beep. Beep. The hollow whispers of a lifeless machine continue. Beep. Beep. Beep. Wow, this table is really cold. The shiny metal, I can almost see my reflection. Viv is standing next to me. Looking down into my eyes. She is crying. Why is she crying? She looks like she is trying to control it but can’t. This isn’t like usual. Whenever I saw her cry I would always follow her into her bedroom, and rest my head on her shoulder until she stopped and hugged me back. But I can’t now. All I can feel is pain. What is wrong with me? Why am I in so much pain? What is happening?
Viv leans down, and hugs me tight. I start to get wet eyes. My throat is dry. Even my paws feel weak. I hear the door open and close. A man in a white coat with the words, ‘Manhattan veterinary clinic’ sown on the top right hand corner with a paw print between the writing. He comes in with a vague but concerned look.
Viv stands up, Lilah also rises from sitting on the green plastic chair. The vet gives them that sympathetic, sad look, and says “I’m sorry. The cancer has spread to Storms organs quicker than we thought. It has spread through his lymphoid glands. Frankly no surgery would remove it completely. We have no other option but to euthanize him. He is suffering. Why don’t I give you three a few moments with Storm.” He hastily walks out of the room, not looking back.
Viv starts crying again. Only this time it’s like a river. And I can’t stop it. I don’t know if I can even believe what I just heard. Viv hugs me for what seems like a lifetime. But is over too quickly. Lilah comes next to Viv and kisses me sweetly on the space between my eyes. Viv lowers down to hug me again, and whispers in my ear, “Thank you for being such a great best friend. I love you Stormy.”
Suddenly, the vet man comes in again. Looking more saddened than before. He walks over to me and says something to Lilah and Viv. Viv puts her hands on my face. My leg feels funny. All tingly. The vet man has shaved the fur of in an uneven square on my front leg. Viv looks at me in the eyes, holds my head up close to her face and gives me her peaceful look. The look she first gave me when she adopted me 7 years ago. My leg feels cold from the sterile wet wipe now. Her eyes make me feel like everything will be okay, like I’ll be alright. “Ouch” another sharp long pain slides into my leg. My head starts to feel heavy. My eyes feel immensely tired all of a sudden. Viv kisses the space between my eyes once more. I drift off into a world of sleep. I can feel Vivian no longer. I can see her, no more.
