Sand

On the beach, the girl, she sits,

Plunges ’to the sand

With a desperate fist.

A wave mocks her

And its lapping lingers,

The granules slip

Right through her fingers;

It’s just not fair,

It’s just not just,

Then into the sand

Her fist she thrusts.

Though she tries,

The wind is harsh,

And tears escape her angry eyes.

Salty air whips her,

beats her, slaps her face:

You cannot have

What defies our race;

It’s just not fair,

It’s just not just,

Then into the sand

Her fist she thrusts.

Frustrated, lost

Inside her mind

The girl, she sees

Yet still she’s blind:

Why can she not

Keep her grasp?

Why does the sand

Through her fingers pass?

Why can’t she hold

What she most desires?

As if it’s wrapped

In the barbed-est wires?

It’s just not fair,

It’s just not just,

Then into the sand

Her fist she thrusts.
