Cake 101

So, you realize that your best friend’s birthday is coming up and you want to bake them something. You think about baking her some cookies or cupcakes but then you remember that she loves chocolate cake! So you decide to bake her favorite type of dessert, but wait, you have never baked a cake before. How will you ever be able to give her the perfect cake for her birthday?! To successfully bake your friend a cake, you need the right ingredients, the correct utensils, and patience.

To start it all off, you will need to get up, get into your car and drive to the local grocery store. When you get to the store, you will need to buy your ingredients. Oh yeah, I hope you brought your money/wallet with you or else your best friend won’t be getting a cake. The ingredients that you will need are chocolate icing, milk, eggs, flour, cooking spray, a cooking pan, if you don’t already have one at home, sugar, vanilla, baking soda, baking powder, cocoa powder, and butter. Once you have got all of this inside your cart and you have checked out, you are ready to go back home and start baking!

Woohoo! You have successfully made it home with all of your ingredients. I hope you didn’t break any of the eggs with your crazy driving! Anyways, preheat your oven to 350?F. While that is heating up, you need to get a cake pan and spray it with cooking spray because no one wants a cake that sticks to the pan. How are you going to eat it if you can’t even get it out of the pan?!

Now grab a bowl; you are now ready to start mixing some of your ingredients together. Pour 2 cups of flour into your bowl. Make sure to use the white flour and not the flower you receive on Valentine’s Day! Next, you need to add ¾ cup of cocoa powder, ¾ teaspoon of baking powder, and 1 teaspoon of baking soda into your bowl. Now, make sure you mix this well, no one wants a nasty and clumpy cake, so you better do this simple step right!

Go grab a large bowl for your next ingredients. Also grab your mixer. Put the following into your large bowl: ¾ cups of butter, 3 eggs, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla. Now here comes the difficult part; do you think you are ready for this? I sure do hope so or else this will be a disaster. I hope you are coordinated enough to do two things at once. Well, here we go! Put the mixer on high and start beating your ingredients in the large bowl; do this for approximately 3-4 minutes or until mixed well. But while you are doing this gradually add 2 cups of sugar into your large bowl. I hope you don’t make a mess all over your kitchen; if you do you can always blame it on the cat or dog.

Now you need to add the mixture of flour, baking powder, baking soda, and cocoa powder into the large bowl. Also add 1 ½ cups of milk and continue beating the mixture until it is completely smooth. Woohoo! I hope you didn’t make a big mess in the kitchen.

You are almost done! You need to go get your baking pan that you sprayed with cooking spray. Gently pour your mixture into the pan and even it out so you don’t end up with a lopsided cake. Just a few more steps!

You can now place the pan into the oven and let it bake for 30-35 minutes. Now I know you are probably going to get impatient while you are waiting but just think of how good the cake is going to taste. Yummy!

Shew, it’s finally been 35 minutes. You can now go check on your cake. The easiest way to make sure your cake is done is to stick a toothpick or a butter knife into the center of it. If the toothpick or knife comes out clean then your cake is done.

Now that your cake is finally done, you can remove it from the oven. But make sure you use pot holders or thick cooking gloves so you don’t burn your hands! You need to place the pan somewhere where it won’t burn anything such as your stove. Yea, that will work just go ahead and place it on the stove. Now here comes another wait. You must wait 10-15 minutes for your cake to cool down enough for you to put the icing on it.

Tick! Tock! Tick! Tock! Yay! It’s been 15 minutes now; go check your cake. Does it feel cool enough to put icing on? I hope so; I’m getting hungry! Now you can put the icing on your cake. This step is easiest to do with a butter knife or an icing spatula. Once you have gotten your icing neatly and evenly spread over your cake, you are ready to cut it.

Now make sure you don’t eat it until your friend gets there!
