She dug trenches
For those not yet born
Those waiting in the womb and
Those being planned

She dug trenches
For those playing on the lawn
Those who know nothing of death
Trenches waiting for those who
Know nothing past now
‘Future’ is just a big people’s word
Barbie’s and Tonka trucks, puzzles and
Hugs from mum and dad
Are all they care for
Death is not a puzzle
They have put together yet
Nor has Mum or Dad
Bought that large and
Complex
Puzzle set

She dug trenches
For those who believe
Themselves invisible and invincible
To the fingers of death
Those who regularly fly down cliffs and
Dance with death on the railway tracks

She dug trenches
For drunks and addicts
Those who readily accept it
But seem to avoid it more often
Than those who suffer with innocence

She dug trenches
For those in their death machines
Cars, trucks, planes and trains
Instruments of steel and iron
Instruments made to kill
She thought of car wrecks
Plane crashes and derailment
She thought of the mass graves they
Created
She dug a trench for
Them all
She saw the world
As a madman
The people walking corpses
She was a doomsayer
Seeing no hope
No point in it
No point in this living business
She didn’t realise that people
Could be content
With their time limit
Not wasting one moment
On worry of what’s to come

She saw the world
As a death pit
Seeing no point
She threw herself
From 12 storeys
She hit the bottom
Falling into her own
Trench
