A short poem about a young man marching to the GPO in Dublin at the beginning of the 1916 Easter Rising. Written for an English assignment, but I rather like it.

THE REBEL SOLDIER

My beloved Ireland I will die for
I know this in my heart
I do this for the weak and poor
for them, I'll play my part.

I'll march on down

O'Connell Street

amidst their taunts and jeers
but their freedom will be sweet
and one day there will be cheers.

Now through the city gunfire sounds
but we will not surrender, we will not hide
my comrades and I will hold our ground
For God is on our side.

The British have been here too long
Inequality is their crime
so raise your voice, join Eire's song
For Irish freedom it is long past time!
