It was a river deep,

with icy eddies in which I swam

against her current,

splashing and thrashing in vain

to please, to abide to love

in the swirls of manipulation,

sensitive heart longing

only to fine smooth sailing

admiring bucolic shorelines...

a river

too wide and too unyielding,

a whining siren wrenching

my heart beneath the

surging water while mocking

my soul with insincere "I love you"...

so as to live

I grasped the edge

of reality's granite ledge

and emerged in the sweet clear air

as that frigid water dripped

drop by drop

back into the rapids

of her disrespect...

I'm free.
