This is the story of a girl and a boy. They spent their childhood together practically joined at the hip. Wherever he went, she was there also they shared everything with each other. They were known around town as the town sweethearts. Everyone loved them and expected them to grow up and fall in love, well they were never ones to disappoint their town.
It happened when she turned 15, he had already been 15 for a couple months. It was like she grew up overnight in his eyes. The night before her birthday she was a little girl, but the next day she was a woman. He couldn’t take his eyes off of her at her birthday party, everyone noticed it except her. She was clueless, as always, when it came to matters of the heart. He heard “my girl” playing on the radio they had blaring in the backyard, as soon as he heard it he made a beeline for his best girl. It was the song that was they called their song. He had been singing it to her for most of their friendship. But that night when he held her in his arms and danced to the song with her, everything changed. It was like his world was turned upside down, all the feelings he had felt for this girl were completely changed. He was head over heels in love with her.
She always knew she liked him, thought it was a stupid childish crush and it would blow over, it never did. When she turned 15 she vowed to stop that childish crush and move on. It didn’t work. It was at her birthday party that everything changed. She felt beautiful and could feel his eyes on her all night long. Then she heard their song, and turned to find him walking straight toward her. As soon as he took her in his arms all she could think of was that she fit perfectly in them and never wanted to leave. That sealed it for her she was head over heels in love with him.
~~~~~~From that day on they were the perfect couple. Never fought and were always happy to be with each other.  They were still practically attached at the hip like always but now it wasn’t uncommon to see them kiss around town. Their relationship went perfect for about a year. Then in one afternoon, everything changed.
He wasn’t sure why he was doing it but he knew he shouldn’t be. He knew he loved her but he also knew that she deserved much better. He was failing out of high school and knew she would be disappointed in him. That’s the last thing he wanted to do was disappoint her. She was his life and he hated to admit it but he couldn’t give her what she deserved in life.So here he was a month after their one year anniversary and he was getting ready to break both their hearts.
She knew something was off with him and wondered if it had anything to do with his grades. She knew he wasn’t doing that great but still thought he was doing decent enough to pass. She loved him, more than anything. They had had their one year anniversary a month earlier and she had given herself to him in every sense on the word. It was both their first times and couldn’t have been more romantic. She though the hung the moon, he was her life. As she was getting ready to go meet him at the bridge they called their spot she got this uneasy feeling and couldn’t shake it. She told herself she was going crazy and went to meet him.
~~~~~~By the time she got there he was already about in tears, but he forced himself to stop and dried his tears. When she sat down he took her hands in his and looked at her but never managed to look her in the eyes. All he said was “I think we should break up. It’s just not working out anymore. I’m sorry” She stared at him in shock and speechless. Finally she was able to say “is this what you really want? Cause if it is then are we at least going to stay friends? I’m not sure if I could lose you as a friend after this long” The boy sadly shook his head and hugged her, then got up and walked away.
He was walking away because he couldn’t stand to look at her anymore, if he did he would burst into tears and beg her to take him back. Tell her exactly what was going on and beg her forgiveness. He wasn’t sure he was strong enough to follow through with his plan. After taking a long walk around town and remembering every little thing that happened to them in that town he went home and pulled his faded blue duffel bag out of his closet.
She couldn’t believe he did that, just broke up with her, out of the clear blue sky. After he was out of sight she laid her head in her hands and cried her eyes out. She loved him more than life itself and gave him everything she had to give. But he took her heart and broke it into a million pieces. She didn’t know what she was going to do when she went back to school. Everyone would be talking and want to know what happened. Truthfully, she herself was wondering that also. Slowly she stood up and walked him, went quietly to her room and curled up on her bed with the bear he had given her a few years ago and cried herself to sleep.
He was up and heading out before his family was even awake the next morning. He knew he couldn’t put it off longer than he had to otherwise he would never go.  He stopped at the bus station to get a ticket then hopped on the first bus to New York. He just had to get out of the small, country town and away from everything that would remind him of her. He figured New York was about as opposite from small South Georgia town than anywhere else could have been. As son as he got seated on the bus he closed his eyes and tried to forget the past week.
She woke up and hurried to get ready for school, then remembered the last night’s events. She managed to stop the tears from coming but was dreading the day at school. She knew he was in all of her classes and wasn’t sure how she could sit next to him and not be able to reach over and hold his hand. But once she got to school and made it through the first few classes she was worried, she hadn’t seen him all day and he should have been there. She called his cell and asked him to call her back and told him she’d keep calling till he answered or called her back.
He heard his phone ring and glanced down but didn’t answer he couldn’t talk to her and tell her what he was doing. He wanted to though, but had to keep reminding himself that she deserved better and he was not going to be the one to brig her down in this world. If she stuck with him she would never go anywhere. He stepped off the bus in New York 20 hours later and promised himself that he would never look back.
She called, four times that day and kept calling everyday after that. She couldn’t just give up on him like the other people in the town had. He left a note all it said was “I’m leaving, don’t worry about me I’ll be fine. Tell her I Love Her and I’m Sorry” that’s all it said. She wasn’t happy with that, she deserved better. And she knew it.
It had been a year. He was working in New York at a coffee shop he managed and was getting ready to move to Athens and run a café on his own. He was a great manager and he knew it. He was excited but a bit nervous also. He knew that was where she had always wanted to go to school. Her whole life she wanted to go to UGA , but this was a chance he couldn’t turn down. He thought about her each and everyday. Always looked forward to her calls, sure he’d never answer them but he’d always listen to the message she left, and she always left one.
It had been a year. She was done with high school and on her way to UGA to start college. It was her dream to go to school there and she couldn’t wait to get there and started. She often wondered where he was. But never found out. Every morning like clockwork she would call him and leave a message on his phone. He never called back or answered. But that was ok with her. She just needed to hear his voice on his voice mail and she was fine. She still loved him and always would. But she knew that soon it would be time to move one and finally start dating again. She was scared to let other men in to her life. Her first love had left her and never looked back.
He was now the owner of his very own coffee shop. He loved that place and lived in an apartment above it, alone. It had been six years since he had moved to Athens and never once ran into her. He had a decent life and still every morning at 8:15AM his cell phone would ring, then beep at him telling him he had a voice mail. It never failed she would always say something, never just call and hang up. He loved listening to those messages. He didn’t date, didn’t see the point, his heart was taken and he would never get it back. Even if it was his own fault he was alone. He regretted it but couldn’t bring himself to call her and beg for forgiveness. He was sure he had moved on.
She was working at hospital right in Athens. She loved this town and never wanted to leave. She had a very routine life. At 8:15AM she would call him and leave a message. Knowing he would never call back. She never dated, that’s why she made such good grades and was a good doctor. She just didn’t see the point in dating. He had her heart and she wasn’t getting it back anytime soon. She loved her job and made it her life. Every moment she could she would stay at the hospital working or visiting patients.
He woke up early one morning and couldn’t get back to sleep. It was like something was wrong somewhere and he wasn’t sure what or where. He looked at the clock and it said 7:56AM he figured he’d just stay awake and listen to the phone ring when she called. He watched the minutes tick by till 8:14AM expecting her to call but she never did.
She was walking to work one day and wasn’t paying much attention. She didn’t sleep good the night before and wasn’t really awake yet. But she knew that it was getting close to 8:15 and was digging through her purse looking for her cell phone to call him when she heard loud screeching sound and looked up in time to see headlights then everything went black.
He was worried, very worried, in seven years she never missed a morning. By noon he was freaking out and getting ready to call her cell phone. But then he saw it on the news “local doctor victim in a fatal hit and run” then they showed a picture of a woman he would recognize anywhere. It was her. He fell to his knees and sobbed. He never told her how much she still meant to him. How much he loved her. And now he would never get to. Now he would never get another 8:15 AM phone call from her again.
