“Can I come out yet?”

“No! Now keep quiet!”

Troy resisted the urge to give the case a gentle kick as he wheeled it into the train. This was less out of compassion for the case’s occupant and more out of a certainty that, if kicked, the dragon would make more noise. This was going to be difficult enough without having to explain to his fellow passengers why his suitcase was talking.

As the train pulled out of the station, Troy found himself cursing his father, then immediately felt guilty for doing so.  One should never speak ill of the dead. Even if the dead were making Troy’s life needlessly difficult.

Among the various articles Troy had inherited from his late father was an old, rusted up sea chest. Unable to open it, Troy had thrown it on the fire. Little did he know that the chest contained a dragon egg, and dragon eggs need fire to hatch.

Now, a week later, here he was. Transporting a baby dragon across the country to reunite her with her family.

“Can I come out yet!”

“I’ll tell you when, now be quiet!”

Troy sighed. This is going to be a long trip.
