A A A

Long time ago, I once hanged out at a mall with a few friends and at some point, I suggested that we catch a late night movie entitled “The Town” which will be over past closing time. The boys rejected the idea but said that they’ll wait for me outside the cinema once it was over. Putting my faith in them, I bought the ticket for myself and eventually went to see the movie all alone.

To be honest, the movie was quite boring and dragging. Basically, it was about a guy who tried to escape a town filled with weirdos but ended up realizing that there was no way to escape the place for the town was nothing more than a site for an experiment conducted by the government. After forcing myself to witness the horrible ending, I was finally able to leave the cinema and can’t wait to return back to the university.

My friends, however, were nowhere to be seen near the entrance when I got out. I went on to check the parking lot outside the exit but the car we drove in was missing. Panicked, I called one of them but his phone was never picked up. I called another one and then another but not a single one of them picked up their phones. More people began to leave the building and the entrance to the cinema was the only area left with the lights still on. Everywhere else has gone dark and to make the matters worse, I actually had to use the bathroom.

Good thing was, the nearest bathroom was just downstairs. You can pretty much guess what the bad news was. And so, I had no choice but to use my cellphone’s light to guide my way as I hastily walked down the steps all alone and walking as fast as I can to the restroom that was right next to a shop that was selling video games. I went in and in spite being all alone in the dark, I actually chose to enter a cubicle instead of using one of the urinals. I didn’t think of anything else except that I wanted the whole thing to be over as soon as possible. When I was about halfway finishing doing my business, I heard a voice.

“Why aren’t the lights on? Damn it...”

It didn’t sound spooky or anything, just the voice of a guy who sounds confused and disappointed. I kept quiet and finished it up before flushing the toilet and quickly went out of the cubicle, hoping that I can just walk past him if possible. It was probably due to the darkness, but I didn’t exactly bump into anyone outside the cubicle. That, however, didn’t stop me from leaving the restroom and making my way back to the cinema upstairs.

“Hey! I’m talking to you! Why aren’t the lights on?”

I suddenly felt goosebumps all over my body. The same voice seems to be calling out to me when there’s literally no one else around. I stopped and scanned the darkness behind me but my lights weren’t picking up on anything worth noting on the desolated floor. The voice might have been bodiless but my instinct was telling me that it was human and not otherwise.

“Hey! Can’t you see me? What’s wrong with you? How did we get here? Why can’t I find a light in this place?”

I know I said that it sounded like a legitimate, living breathing human being but seeing how I was unable to see anyone else there, I began to pick up my pace before rushing back upstairs.

“Hey! Where are you going! There’s nothing up there!”

The voice was getting louder but I wasn’t hearing any footsteps going after me. By the time I reached the cinema again, there was already no one there.

“Hey! Come back here!”

Oh, my God, there was that voice again.

Even with the lights at the entrance, it didn’t help one bit. Someone or something was going after me and I can’t see them. I went for one of the exits before dialing my friend again.

“Where are you going! Don’t leave me here!”

The voice just won’t give up! There were only a few vehicles left at the parking lot and I find myself struggling to get at least one of them to pick up their phone! I had no choice but to wander around, hoping by some miracle that I’ll bump into the car but that of course, didn’t happen.

“Who are you calling? Who are you looking for! Answer me!”

The voice was practically shouting at me at this point. There was only one thing left to do. I quickened my steps towards the exit road at the far end eventhough it wasn’t meant for a pedestrian to walk on. I was panicking and running out of ideas and I walked really fast down the spiraling road, all the while hearing the voice asking why I was leaving him behind.

“This isn’t the stairs! Don’t leave me!”

A car then passed me by. It didn’t honk or anything but I can just feel them staring at me from inside their vehicle. After all, I had no business going down that way. It was only when I reached the bottom that the voice began to fade away.

Don’t….leave...me...”

Slight echo of it remains before going silent for good as I made my way towards a nearby 24/7 restaurant.

To my surprise, I saw my friend’s car parked just right outside of it. I immediately went inside and saw them eating with another group of students that I wasn’t familiar with. One of them saw me and immediately went to apologize for not picking up his phone due to not noticing its vibration inside his pocket. I got angry with all of them and went down to sit all alone at the corner after saying a few angry words. We hardly spoke ever since that day and as far as I can remember, we never hang out again, not even after we were no longer students.
