Paper Mache Lovers

By D W Phoenix

This love was not about you

This love was not about me

This love was all about us

How we are supposed to be

Heard to many ifs and butts

Said to many does and don’ts

Gave to many no,s and whys

Just to many cants and won’ts

The way you kept on taking

Without ever giving back

You left my heart with nothing

Till my love began to crack

It’s like chasing after rainbows

But never getting near enough

You’re looking for that pot of gold

You keep dreaming will bring you love

You make paper mache lovers

Someone to talk to in the night

You can’t stop yourself from thinking

The embers of love still burn bright

For your heart still longs to be loved

Paper mache men arn,nt enough

For you can’t make love to nothing

If there’s just nothing there to love

It is said the scars of love

Can be hurtful and so deep

Wash the hurt and pain with tears

Then cleanse your soul as you weep

It may take a special man

To take away all your pain

Before you feel strong enough

To think about love again

But for now you keep busy

With paper mache lovers

As you whisper your secrets

Safe beneath your covers

It’s like chasing after rainbows

But never getting near enough

You’re looking for that pot of gold

You keep dreaming will bring you love

You make paper mache lovers

Someone to talk to in the night

You can’t stop yourself from thinking

The embers of love still burn bright

For your heart still longs to be loved

Paper mache men arn,nt enough

For you can’t make love to nothing

If there’s just nothing there to love
