It was a normal dog. Some mutt with shaggy brown fur and long ears.
I didn’t think twice about it when I passed it in town.
Nor when I saw it again a few moments later in a different spot.
But I started to feel an eerie presence. I was sure somebody would be there when I turned the corner. And it happened more than once where I thought I saw something in the corner of my eye.
This dog snuck around my thoughts. It dashed in the shadows and barked in my ears.
My heart started pounding.
I rubbed my arm and felt goose bumps.
Then I spotted it just across the street.
It watched me with its ominous dark eyes. There was something wrong with those eyes. It was like something was missing from them. Something was hidden.
I walked quicker now.
The dog was only twenty feet behind me.
I started jogging.
It was inside the building I passed.
I jogged faster.
It was in the middle of the road in front of me.
Now I was sprinting.
My head pulsed. My legs quivered. The hairs on the back of my neck stood straight up.
I ran into an alley. It was there.
“What is with you, you stupid dog?!” I cried.
“I want you, Dave. I want you,” the dog said.
“What?! What do you want with me?!”
“I want you, Dave. I want you. And I will get you.”
“Get me?! What do you mean?!”
Those were the last words Dave said.
