Michael Maggio (1889-1959) was a member of the Philadelphia crime family. Michael was born on July 21, 1889, in Campobello di Mazzara, Sicily to parents Pietro Peter J. Maggio and Preciosa Bonafede. Michael was known as a wealthy Philadelphia cheese merchant. According to an informant he reported that Michael was a big man in the Mafia who has committed many murders. An informant also reported that Michael was the "chairman of the Board" of the Greaser Gang and was the "head of the 'Mafia' in Philadelphia. Michael cheese company, Maggio Cheese Company which was located on 11th and Washington Street in Philadelphia, PA was used as the headquarters for Mob boss, Angelo Bruno numbers rackets. Philadelphia mobster Dominick Pollina was a Maggio Cheese employee and listed as a Vice President of the Maggio Cheese company. Michael Maggio apparently retired in late 1955 "due to age and ill health," and business operations were turned over to his son Philadelphia mobster Peter Maggio. Michael Maggio died in Miami Beach on March 14, 1959, and his body was returned to Philadelphia for viewing and burial. Michael is laid to rest at the Holy Cross Cemetery which is located in Yeadon, Delaware County, Pennsylvania.
