She's fifteen and in love
with the person she makes him out to be;
ninth-grade modern languages class,
three hours a week of excruciating stares
and obvious observation from her chair across the room.
His posture, eyes, smile, jokes;
she knows them as well as her own,
in her uncomfortable itching skin and baggy sweaters
she wastes the hour looking at her favorite distraction
and pretends to not know the grammar
of now and then, so he will share
a pained grimace and a sarcastic comment:
something in common, a sense of unity.
He shortens their time together when he
comes in late, five or fifteen minutes, and while
he still doesn't know the correct pronounciation of
'I'm sorry I'm late', she's had it memorized for every class--
she's had his imaginary features memorized forever.
She's fifteen and in love
and wastes her year for someone she believes in;
someone who doesn't exist
but will give her mischievous smiles and unsubtle winks
and she thinks she has him figured out
when no one else has.
