He woke up rather early in the morning; so early that the birds were still singing, and so early that the crickets were still chirping away.  Today was his appointment, and he didn´t waste any time, so, he got up and got dressed as quickly as he could. He wore a pair of black skinny jeans, a black T-shirt and a dark gray sweater.  He also wore his glasses, for without them, he would not be able to see the people he comes across with on the street. I mean, it´s not like he´s genuinely interested in saying hi to people, rather he simply does it to show good manners. I digress. He came out of the front door to his house, without having any breakfast, and he made his way to his appointment. He walked through the rainy streets of his small town, and he heard the buzz of the cars as they zoomed by next to him. He observed the old men and women who were heading to church; some accompanied by their significant other, with whom they had been all their lives, or so he thought. Others, alone or accompanied by other old folks, probably their friends, who went to church with all the joy in the world. Apart from the old couples, he notices that there were many teenagers with their girlfriend or boyfriend. They didn´t look too interested in going to church, but rather seemed to just be enjoying being able to be together that early in the morning. He observed them for a couple of seconds, but before he began to think too much, he realized he had to hurry and get to the appointment if he wanted to be there early. So, he hurried off.

When he arrived at his appointment, he entered the building and continued to the waiting room. He noticed he had arrived far too early, for there was nobody in the waiting room yet with him. In the waiting room, apart from there being a door that lead to the outside world, there was only one other door, that was the door which the patients go through when their name is called. He then sat himself on one of those comfy black chairs, those with soft cushion on the back so the patients could be more comfortable. He took one of the magazines that was lying on one of the tables to his side and he started to read it. For some reason, the magazines in these places were always about celebrities or new advances in technology.  And, normally, these magazines were really old, like many months or even many years old. But either way, he still read them to pass the time.

Some minutes later, a person arrived in the waiting room. It was a girl. She had brown hair, her skin was a little lighter than the color of coffee and her eyes the same had that same color, but these seemed to resemble more the color of actual coffee. She sat two seats away from him. They looked at each other in the eye for a couple of seconds, but then returned their eyes to the magazines in front of them and they continued reading.

A few minutes later, another person entered the waiting room. This time it was a man. He looked to be thirty-five years old and his skin was as white as snow. He looked at the girl for a couple of seconds and then at him. The white man walked towards him and sat beside him. He tapped him on the shoulder and asked him, in a whisper: “Is it almost your turn?”

“I don´t know.” He answered. The albino man frowned and also took a magazine from the small table, and….they both just read.

He didn´t know how much time had passed, but in the blink of an eye, the waiting room was almost completely full. He was there, but so was the girl with the coffee eyes, and the man with the white skin, and there was now also a young man who seemed to be about fifteen years old, give or take; and an old lady, whose hair was as white as the skin of the albino man, and finally, there was another man whose hair was long and black. Everybody was sitting on those black comfy chairs, and everybody was reading….until someone opened the door.

Through the door came a beautiful, tall and blonde woman, whose eyes were as blue as a clear summer sky. She wore a black skin-tight dress and some very high heels. She looked at everyone in the waiting room, and she then said, “Maximilian!” then the man with the long black hair stood up and said, “That´s me!” He took her hand and they entered through the door. Together.

Some minutes later, somebody else opened the door. This time, it wasn´t the blonde woman. It was indeed a woman, but this woman had dark skin and a hair almost as dark as the darkest night. She looked at everyone in the waiting room and she stopped when she saw the albino man. “William,” said she, with a sweet and warm tone of voice. The man with the white skin stood up and walked toward the woman. But first, before they left, he said something, “good luck” were the words that left his mouth. Then, him and the woman grabbed each other’s hands and closed the door behind them.

He didn´t really remember how much time passed before the next person was called. He had already taken another magazine and he started to read it in silence. He was reading the first pages when something caught his attention. “Scientists discover life on Mars. January 25th, 2030” He didn´t understand why the magazine would have that date on it, because he knew it was 2018 right now. He thought for a moment, but he arrived to the conclusion that the magazine was probably fake, that the doctor probably put it there as a joke. So, he continued to read…Cancer is cured. September 2nd, 2025. Interesting, he thinks and laughs in his head…Book a flight to the Moon for only 150 dollars. April 12th, 2023…he kept on reading, and as he read, everything in these pages seemed even more interesting and amusing to him.

When he finished reading and lifted his head up, he realized that the old lady wasn´t there anymore. The only ones there were a man who looked just like the fifteen year old boy and the girl with the coffee eyes, who at this moment now looked like a beautiful woman. His eyes remained on these individuals. He stood up and took a few steps towards them. “What´s wrong with you!? Why do you look like that!?” The man and woman looked at each other and then at him, confused, for they did not know why he was saying that or what was going on. They only said: “What are you talking about? Are you alright, Sir?” He sat down and he continued to observe them: to observe the man who, a few minutes ago, was not even old enough to drink; and he paid close attention to the beautiful woman, who was just a young lady a few moments ago. There is no doubt in his mind that those people are who he thinks they are, but….-What has happened? he asks himself. Why do they look so old?

He´s still looking at them, and he does until someone opens the door. He was hoping that this time it was for him, but it wasn´t. From that door came a family. It was the albino man, now even older then when he had gone in. He was accompanied by the woman with the dark skin and two small children; a boy and a girl. When the white man saw him, he said to him, his voice filled with a hint of sorrow, “You´re still here…” and he left the building with the woman and the two children.

Moments later, somebody else came out. This time it was the man that had the long, black hair, but now he was bald and much older. He was with the white, blonde girl and next to them was a German shepherd. They left the building together, holding hands as they walked out of the waiting room. He didn´t understand why it wasn´t yet his turn. He had been the first one there, in the waiting room...-in that moment, the door opened again. It was a woman, a bit stubby, and she had a black piercing on her nose. She looked at the people who were left in the waiting room, and stopped when her eyes came across the girl with the coffee eyes. In that instant, her eyes filled with an amazing and bright light… and, she smiled. “Mary” she said. The girl with the coffee eyes didn´t hesitate, she got up from here chair and ran to meet the girl with the piercing and they hugged for a while. After that, they left through the door together and closed the door. He still didn´t understand why it was not his turn yet.

-Why the hell has it not been my turn?- he asked himself over and over again. –If I got here first, then why has it not been my turn!!??- In his head, he heard many voices, and the silence of the waiting room incited him to over-think even more.

He felt as a tear rolled down his check, and with his right hand he took out a handkerchief from his pants pocket and wiped the tear away. In that moment, he felt something strange. He touched his face, and he realized it was covered in facial hair and that his skin was wrinkly. He looked at his reflection on the screen of his cell phone and saw what he had turned into. He was old, very old, maybe fifty years or so. He turned to face the other man, who was now also incredibly old. The other man looked at him dead in the eye and said, “I guess we weren´t born to be happy.” And he stood up and the other old man left the waiting room through the back door.

He stayed there, in the waiting room, only his solitude to keep him company. And time passed, until one day, many many years later, the man left the waiting room through the back door, and no one knew what happened to him then.
