An alleyway setting. One trash bin US SR. Lighting is very dim. There are buildings on each side of the alley. DAVID ATTMAN, a slender teenage boy wearing pajamas, is standing DS SL staring into the dark alley. DAVID is looking around frantically, trying to understand how he got there.
(After numerous tries to force the words through his lips, he finally whispers through terror, almost stuttering)
Who are you?
WHO ARE YOU?!
A very tall, muscular, HOODED MAN, wearing a black cloak with a hood, steps out from behind the trash bin into the dimly lit alley. He holds his hands out in an alarmed position, looking very tense.
(In a deep, stern voice)
David, I mean no harm. I wish for you to come with me.
(Stuttering out of terror)
What for? Who are you?
If you do not come with me, there will be consequences. They will harm you. I am here to make things easier and smoother, which I can only do if you come with me.
Why must I come with you? Where are you going? (Stutters) Who will harm me?
The HOODED MAN rushes back into the darkness behind the trash bin, out of sight. DAVID stands in the same spot looking puzzled.
Go home, get a good night’s rest, and everything will make sense in the morning.
HOODED MAN speaks from the darkness behind the trash bin.
Consider yourself warned, David Attman.
There is a flash of light and DAVID is left alone.
This is all a bad dream, and soon I will wake up and forget about it completely.
DAVID begins to exit SL.
Just wake up. Just wake up. Just wake up....
DAVID is walking down a hallway at school (SR to SL). Wearing a t-shirt and jeans. There are posters hanging on the wall US. DAVID stumbles around in confusion and then drops to his knees and stares off into the distance, in a trance, his body stiff with fright.
(Offstage, echoing in a deep haunting voice)
They will harm you. They will harm you. They will harm you.
MR. STEWART, a young teacher enters SL wearing a dress shirt and khakis and approaches DAVID.
David? David, are you okay? You look ill. Do you need to go to the nurse?
DAVID is still in a trance, looking off into the distance, unresponsive.
(Picking up DAVID)
I’m taking you to the nurse’s office; everything is going to be okay.
DAVID’S body goes limp. MR. STEWART exits SL carrying DAVID.
DAVID lies in a hospital bed CS wearing a hospital gown. His father, MR. ATTMAN, wearing a suit, is sitting in a chair next to the bed on the right. His mother, MRS. ATTMAN, wearing casual work attire, is standing at the foot of the bed with a water bottle in hand. There is a curtain hanging not far from DAVID’S face on the left.
(In a high piercing, worried voice)
David? David, honey? Can you hear me?
DAVID groggily rolls over and opens his eyes.
DAVID notices he is not in his own bedroom and becomes confused, he sits up as fast as he can causing him to feel light headed and almost falls back over, looks around, noticing his parents.
Great, I’m dying.
(Mumbling from his chair)
How are you feeling?
(Spits out quickly through a dry mouth)
DAVID quickly searches around the room for something to drink, finding a water bottle in his mother’s hand. DAVID looks up at his mother, pointing at the bottle. MRS. ATTMAN hands DAVID the water
bottle and sits down on the bed beside him.
(Through a suppressed worried tone)
Honey, what happened?
I don’t know. I went to school and the next thing I remember is waking up just now.
Mr. Stewart said you looked very ill in the hall, and that you weren’t responsive. Did something happen?
I don’t know.
Is everything going okay at school?
Yeah, everything is fine.
Don’t get snarky with your mother. She is just trying to get to the bottom of things. The doctor doesn’t have the slightest clue as to what happened. We are just trying to figure things out.
DOCTOR TREY, the doctor, wearing black pants and a white lab coat, knocks offstage and then enters SL. DOCTOR TREY smiles as he moves to greet MRS. ATTMAN and MR. ATTMAN and then turns his attention to DAVID.
Do you have any idea what happened to you, son?
I don’t know.
Well, I don’t know either. My only explanation is that you had a panic attack of some sort at school. A panic attack so severe that it consumed your entire body and you went into shock. What I can’t figure out is why. You are perfectly healthy. You have no history of any mental health problems, and you have no idea what happened, so we have no known cause. Some people just have these panic attacks randomly, but they usually have a history of anxiety, which you do not. I am going to treat you by simply giving you a couple of anxiety medications that you can take if you ever feel like this is going to happen again. If you think it’s necessary, I can also refer you to someone to talk to. Other than that, I can’t really come up with any sort of medical explanation for what happened to you. I checked everything imaginable, even your brain functions. Nothing is wrong.
DAVID nods in acknowledgement and then lies back down.
DAVID is alone in his dimly lit bedroom, wearing his pajamas, asleep on his bed CS. A night stand is beside the bed on the left. A pill bottle is on the stand. A tall lamp is located US SR in the
corner. Clothing and papers are scattered about the room.
They’re watching you. They’re watching you. They’re watching you...
DAVID wakes up quickly. He searches the room with his eyes and then springs out of bed and turns on the light
Maybe I should take some of those anxiety meds.
DAVID reaches for the pill bottles on the nightstand, quickly opens it and dry swallows the pill
(Sighs with relief)
Enters MRS. ATTMAN, wearing casual attire, SR.
How are you feeling today?
MRS. ATTMAN hands DAVID a glass of water.
I’m feeling fine. You have nothing to worry about.
DAVID Stumbles toward his mother and takes the glass, trying to hold it but drops it. MRS. ATTMAN rushes to his aid.
Are you sure you’re feeling okay?
Yes, I’m fine, really. You have nothing to worry about.
Okay. Well, how would you feel about going back to school tomorrow?
Yeah, sure, I can do that. How long have I been out?
Nearly a week now. You’ve mostly slept though.
Right, I knew that.
MRS. ATTMAN begins to exit SR.
By the way, what day is it?
MRS. ATTMAN looks back at DAVID worriedly.
I’m kidding, mom. Don’t get your panties in a bunch.
DAVID climbs into bed. MRS. ATTMAN turns off the light. Exit MRS. ATTMAN. The room is now dim.
How can I just not know what day it is? Is something really wrong with me? What happened to me?
The pill bottle on the stand falls to the floor, frightening DAVID. Struck with terror, slowly climbs out of bed and makes his way toward the light switch, looking back into the darkness
I’m going to turn the light on.
Turns the light on.
Where are you? I know you’re watching me.
Where is the camera? I know you can see me.
Begins frantically searching his room surveying every object in the room closely and then tosses it behind him
Enter MR. ATTMAN, wearing pajamas.
(Rushes in) (Angry)
DAVID, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING? IT’S TWO IN THE MORNING AND YOU’RE IN HERE MAKING A MESS. WHY DID YOU DO THIS?
(In a trance)
I’ll find you. I swear it.
Continues surveying objects.
Enter MRS. ATTMAN, wearing a night gown.
MRS. ATTMAN rushes to DAVID’s side. Holds him.
What is going on?
DAVID Struggles against her grasp, beginning to come out of his trance, looks at his mother longingly.
I’m quite tired. I just need to get some rest, that’s all. I was just looking for something and lost my mind a little.
Okay, if you need anything we are just down the hall. Goodnight.
Exit MR. ATTMAN and MRS. ATTMAN. DAVID climbs back into bed.
Where are they hiding those cameras? Why are they in here to begin with? What do they want with me? Who was that hooded man in the alley? My room is completely trashed and I haven’t a clue why. (Pleading) Someone just make it all go away.
DAVID is back in the alleyway staring into the shadows, wearing his pajamas, sitting on the ground DS SL. HOODED MAN, wearing a cloak, is in the shadows behind the trash bin.
DAVID bravely stands up and walks toward the trash bin.
Where are you? I know you’re here. I can feel you watching me.
Screams echo in the distance.
(Panicking, begins to tremble)
What was that? Who are you? WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?
They’re watching you.
Who is? I can feel you there.
DAVID falls to the ground, limp. HOODED MAN picks DAVID up and carries him DS SR.
Where are you taking me?
Into the unknown.
HOODED MAN exits SR carrying DAVID.
