Eventually, we grow up. Charles Dickens, in Great Expectations, had this theory that people tumbled upward as they spiraled downward in the act of growing up. I believe in his theory.

We were born under the stars
and brought up to be above it all.
We were taught that life wasn't so hard,
and learned that it was a lie.
We were told we had to love to be loved
and didn't know the consequences that came with love.
There were things we knew and more we didn't,
but we made the most of each day because we knew there was no other way.
We were meant for something more than this
but we weren't sure what 'more than this' was.
We always wanted to be somebody
but we were stuck being nobodies.
We knew we'd grow eventually
but we just wished 'eventually' would come sooner.
There were things we wanted and more we couldn't have,
but we waited and waited each day because we were stubborn and wanted things to go our way.
Not everything was what we thought it would be
and we were confused but we made it okay
because Life was so kind to us
and we decided to stay.
