The shadow covers your heart,

Like a ribbon over your eyes,

A black line on the equator,

Making a division of your soul;

You love the darkness so much

That all the honey in the world

Would not sway your mind

To a gentler disposition.

In the dark you play for keeps,

Forgetting friends and loves

For the nuance of appetite,

Feeding only your loneliness;

You can still live for something

Under the rules of darkness,

But the geometry of the void

Leaves no room for affection.

You dreamed it into your world,

Summoning it from your heart

Where bitterness was bred,

And other dreams died slow;

Now it sits high in your regard,

Laughing behind your eyes—

And your only recourse

Is to smile in dark humour.
