I could not sleep while slipping slowly;

For the mutterers mutter over matters

While the titterers titter and tatter,

Their words caked brittle and brown

All over treacherous tortured teeth;

I could not sing subtle sibilant syllables

While the whisperers warp and whittle

Their blunt and bloody blusters

Into shiny sharpened shapes;

I could not stand alone to hear

The monuments they fashioned of my fears,

So I kept tucked between the sheets

And stashed away my hostage tears.
