I wonder why I remained rooted to this spot
For an eternity’s quick sentence to dust?
I wonder why I stayed, even after I heard
You playing with my shackles in the dark...

Comfort me, oh sweet sounds of metal,
When I now know who has been visiting;
I shall want you to come again, little girl,
If only I could touch your face and hear your tears…

Did I frighten you when I reached out,
Aghast and blind as our hearts screamed pain;
Did it turn you deaf? Forgive me my scarlet wounds
For they shall no longer heal even
As you cry over them… they could not.

Hold me, tightly if you please, and
Let the coldness of metal warm with your fierce embrace
Then I shall speak your delicate name
To ears useless for words, for ever only to feel breath.

I wonder why you remain by my side
When the door is left open for your escape?
I wonder why you stayed, why you whispered
A promise to never leave me again…
