Stepping over the drunken fools

As they fall off their bar side stools

Avoid their conversation laced with depression

Alcohol helps them to avoid life's primary lesson

My attention drawn to an old man, who scans the betting pages

His life and bank balance collapsing in self demolished stages

A dark liquid stains his glass, which stands

Forever a safe distance from his twitching hands

His ex wife and ex job scrawled deep lines in his face

Ultimately parked his existence in this foreboding place

Told he can no longer smoke, though he's tried

Forced to step into the cold and inhale outside

The irony of a building serving liquids to buy

Can extract from the vulnerable, sucking them dry

The regulars all seem to be socially stuck

And in denial, claim it's all down to bad luck
