I remember looking at Nan and thinking you look so tired and weak

I updated her on my life and I left with the usual kiss to her cheek

I took several steps then peered over my shoulder

Something was telling me she would not be getting much older

She looked content almost folded into the hospital bed

A firm large white pillow supporting her frail head

She wore a smile on her face and was soaked in perfume

The arranged flowers failing to brighten the room

I just wish I could have made the conversation somehow more relevant

Injected some realism just been more eloquent

Three hours later and my memory was on recall

Nan was handing me a big bag of sweets when I was small

My phone started to ring ”Who would be calling me this late in the day ?”

It was my Father, telling me Nanny Doris had just passed away

An unwelcome chill travelled to every bone

Tears soon tracked the shape of the phone

The funeral, complete with song and sun

a final poignant goodbye

I was angry with God and felt justified to ask

”Why do loved ones have to die ?”
