My mother once told me
Some pin their hearts on their sleeves
She knew so much, hiding
In her room with the door closed.
Sleep drifts in and out the window
While the memory of the dream
Slips silently away before
I can lay my head down again
And fix the order of my thoughts
While I hide behind my own door.
Then the stars come out to dance
Showing their scars
Whispering their stories
Pirouetting across the night sky
Hoping someone will pick them
To save, to hold, to love.
My mother once told me
Some pin their hearts on their sleeves
Or chains sliding down their necks
She had hers in her shadow
Clinging on by a thread
Which she tore with her teeth.
