A guy gets left behind by his friends on a Friday night...

“Left Behind”

At fifteen

he thought that

he would be

free

from many of

the things that

have tormented

him

when it came

to people

more specifically

the one’s he

calls “Friends”

a word he

knows

he’s using in

a way

that doesn’t match

the definition

a fact right

now

that is being

brought to the

fore front

of his attention

as he hears

a car stereo

blasting

in front of his

house

as the driver

leans on the

horn

so there can be

no mistake

he knows they

are out there,

he just lays

on his bed

trying to block

them

out of his

mind

having fallen for

their stupid joke

last week

running out the

door

only to watch

them speed away

as he tries

to catch up

to them,

and as loud

as the music

is outside

he can still

hear their laughter

as they drive

off

while he lies

there

staring at a

poster of

a Japanese

horror movie

two teen girls

dressed in the

typical

blue school

girl uniform

one holding a

bloody katana blade

the other girl

holding a chainsaw

which of course

is also dripping

in blood

as he waits

for his cell phone

to begin to

vibrate

which it is

soon doing

a hurtful jab

from the gang

wishing they had

the room to

squeeze him in

to the car,

he was number

five

in a group

that never exceeded

four

the substitute

that only got

called on

when someone

was missing

he doesn’t reply

to their baiting

his eyes go

back

to the Hot

Asian teens

looking in his

direction

with a

“Don’t Fuck,

with us”

gleam in their

eyes

as he wonders

about such things

as loyalty

truth

and honor

do such codes

really exist

between people

between friends,

a new text

drops in

an update on

their pursuit of

a VW bug

filled with screaming

high school girls

he wished that

he could make

himself believe

this was their

way

of including him

in their games

but that false

illusion

was shattered

long ago

he can’t help

but see it

for what it

really is

their taking pleasure

in his pain

of being left

behind,

he’s had this

poster

for over a

year now

found it by

accident

in a vintage

record store

bargain bin

he has spent

countless hours

analyzing

the shot

of the two

girls

going back and

forth

between which

vixen is hottest

and which has

the best weapon

for killing hordes

of zombie infected

classmates

even after a

year

he’s still up

in the air

on both questions,

he’s curious if

the two girls

are friends

or just ended

up

banding together

to survive,

as much as

he would hate

to be eaten

while fighting

zombies

the thought of

having a friend

that was so

loyal and true

that they would

fight to the

death

back to back

with you

is a frequent

fantasy

brought on by

this poster,

his phone again

is vibrating

feeling to him

as if it was

shaking the whole

bed

along with his

world

another quick

reminder

of his social

ranking

on that short

list of five

names,

he never replies

to their constant

prodding

tomorrow when he

sees them all

he’ll come up

with a story

a well-constructed

lie

to try and save

face

maybe he’ll say

he wasn’t home

or was sick

in bed

on a Friday

night

a cover story

he will hang

on to

no matter how

hard

they try and

break it a part

the truth

to painful

for him to

admit to,

he thought at

fifteen

he wouldn’t need

friends

all that much

he could move

past that need

to belong

to something

but he found

he couldn’t go

it alone

so he plays

along

not wanting to

let go of

the closest thing

he has next

to friendship

something his

insecure youth

won’t let him

trade away

to gain a

small measure of

self-respect,

his mind

seeking shelter

from their digital

taunting

hides in the

movie poster

on the wall

standing between

the two girls

with a katana

blade

in his right

hand

and a chainsaw

in his left

ready to die

if need be

fighting the zombies

together

true friends

to the very

end…

I really like this one, and I for one do appreciate how you connect unexpected elements in unexpected ways. I too feel the word friend is too casually used... few I would really call my friend. very nicely penned!

Wow, Tom, with friends like them he certainly does not need enemies. His self-respect is worth more than the lot of them put together. Sorry, but that's a kind of bullying I really can't stand. Brilliant write, though!
