Crazy

Auntie Mary keeps telling me, like she's confiding in

me, and she don't want Uncle Johnno to hear, that

she's suffering, and no-one understands her, not even

her own family, that they all think she's neurotic, and

even Uncle Johnno told her she was of her rocker.

Yes, that even her own family her  told her

to pray to Jesus 'cause they thought she was crazy and

that the first person to understand was Dr Buddha. And

then she starts telling me what a good man Dr Buddha is,

that he's an American, that the Japs would have invaded

us if it hadn't been for the Americans, saving us from

them, and if they hadn't saved us we would be using chop

sticks now, and not knives and forks, and how do you eat

mash potato and peas with chop sticks?

" Yes, " she says, " Thank God for the Americans, if it

hadn't been for the Americans we wouldn't be able to

pray to Jesus, we'd have to pray to one of them Jap gods,

and that's a deadly sin. "

And now she says poor Dr Buddha can't practice medicine

or prescribe drugs because he ain't got a degree from an

Australian university. " Have you ever heard such tommy rot? "

She shouts at me, "He used to be a university professor in

America, and the Australian government, the fools, won't

let him he a doctor here. They should be shot the fools! "
