CHILDHOOD.FAMILY.WEIRD.FLASH FICTION. FROM THE COLLECTION " BORN UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF SHADOWS " NO 143

Zen

Auntie Mary is pissed again, and trying to explain

Zen to me, as she describes how she invented the

wheel. It was during the monsoon season she tells

me, and she was sitting at the entrance to her hut

watching the rain.

Then she saw for the first time a rain drop splash

into a puddle and create an expanding circular

ripple. Then she said, she transposed the circle in

her mind from one dimension to three dimensions,

tilting it till it turned along in the mud, turning,

turning as a wheel.

And I try to tell her that the wheel was invented

long before she claimed to have invented it, and

she snaps back, " Of course it was Jasper. What

do you think I am an idiot Jasper? "

She tells me that I've missed the point. This was the

first time she'd invented the wheel, she says.

She tells me it was a moment of sheer bliss, with

all her being focused, like it was for me during that

moment when I smashed my school friend's head

in.

- You're a visionary like me Jasper. If ony you'd

take some notice of what I tell you. You should let

me help you Jasper instead of running off with some

girl all the time Jasper!

- How would you known?

- Because I'm your real mother Jasper. I'm your real

mother Jasper, don't you ever forget that! Maya was

never your mother! She just looked after you!
