The faucet creaked in complaint as the water flowed over her. The door swung open silently, its familiar voice hushed by the footfall of water, the sharp thud on the glass ruptured her illusion of solidarity.
‘Tom.’ She muttered, jumping at the noise.
The man that stood before her, the one who slowly swung open the glass door, was the shattered reflection of the man who had left for Hong Kong two months previously. His obsidian suit still fit perfectly, his aftershave washed over her, his eyes still froze her in place, physically, he was the same.
He kissed her silently, the water plastering his suit to his muscular frame, her knees buckled; he threw his jacket to the floor. Shaking her head, she pushed him back.
‘Tom-’ he eyes spoke the volumes that her mouth could not.
‘You didn’t miss me?’ he frowned, his bottom lip jutting like a four year old’s.
‘I did, I did.’ Her arms remained at his shoulders, holding him at arms length.
‘But?’
‘Nothing, just not now ok?’
‘So you do love me?’ he kissed her neck slowly, pulling her arms around him, she nodded in reply. ‘You haven’t seen me for – months.’ His tongue ran along her jaw as he whispered. ‘And all I want – is you, and you won’t let me have that? I’m sorry, but you can’t do that to me.’
‘Tom, please.’ she begged, trying in vain to push him back.
‘I don’t want to hurt you.’ He assured her softly, his hand running over her shivering flesh.
‘Tom, stop, please.’ Tears stung at her eyes as she struggled beneath him.
‘It’ll take longer if you struggle.’ he warned, shoving her back against the tap, her cry of pain calling on ignorant ears.
***
‘Tom,’ her eyes had filled with tears, staring up at his large frame.
He kissed her softly, running his fingers through her hair, his other arm supporting him on the cushion above her head.
‘I’m pregnant.’ She added quickly, her lips clamping shut in a vain attempt to hold back sobs. His brow creased, bile rising in his throat.
He sat up slowly, pulling her with him so she was in his lap, her sobs lost in his chest, her tears running over his skin.
It was an hour before he spoke.
‘Shh, it’ll be fine.’ He whispered, kissing her head.
‘I have a person inside me Tom, someone’s life.’ She choked, her breath quickening.
‘And that’s a beautiful thing.’ He tilted her face towards his. ‘I’ll be here, I’ll help you.’
