A simple wish. Will it come true?

The Wish

He sat there on a bench, sheltered by the branches of the tree at night, with a view that overlooked a misty valley. He looked up at the genie.

“What is your wish?” He whispered in a modulated tone.

“I could wish for a car, home or an island. I wouldn’t even care for myself and the people around me. If you let me wish, let me wish for her to be happy. Let me wish that she has everything she wants, and everything she loves” He spoke tremulously.

“Are you sure? You can have anything but you wish for her to be happy?” The Genie replied with a deep and monotone voice

“Yes. I don’t know if I’ll be there when this wish is fulfilled" The boy whispered. "But I’ll know she’s happy which is enough” He replied but this time, with a sense of elation as he glanced up at the genie.

“The Wish is fulfilled” The Genie's voiced thundered and clattered beyond the leaves and shook the ground beneath the boy's feet.

He squeezed his eyes closed and thought “Let me appear beside her. Please, please, oh, please let me be the reason behind her happiness. Please, please!”

He opened his eyes and realised there was no one there. He was still on the same bench, and under the same tree and under the same navy blue sky. He broke into tears and spoke under his breath “Turns out I wasn’t her happiness”. He stood up and walk a few lifeless steps forward under the moonlight and he kicked a stone away. The boy turned to the moon above “At least now she is where she wants to be and is happy”

“Right behind you” She whispered.
